The Johara Jewels is a mentoring program for young ladies ages 9-18 designed to promote Spirituality, Self-Awareness, Scholarship, Sisterhood and Service to the community. The organization was established to be a support system to young ladies during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Young ladies from all socioeconomic backgrounds are treated as sisters and make lifelong friendships while learning about themselves and others.  Mentors from various professions including education, social work, medicine, law, entrepreneurs and more volunteer as roles models for our members and are committed to imparting values that will empower our Jewels to become well rounded members of their communities.

 

There are five levels of membership and each are determined by a combination of grade point average, participation, parent involvement, and community service hours completed. Members are also encouraged to nominate other young ladies for membership. The membership levels are as follows: Amethysts, Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies and Diamond. All members begin as Amethysts and may progress to Diamond.

Activities include weekly meetings, community service projects, youth summits, fundraisers, step teams, dance teams, and many more. Guest speakers are invited monthly to share information about their respective professions.  Jewels also attend study hall to ensure their academic success. Those Jewels that maintain a 3.0 or higher serve as peer tutors during study

hall. Peer tutors receive community service hours useful for job applications as well as scholarship applications.

 

The membership process involves each candidate completing an application including a narrative essay, letters of recommendation from teachers/counselors and two interviews. Candidates that meet the requirements are accepted and prepare for induction. Applications are accepted throughout the year however; induction is once a year. The members are called Jewels so that they are always reminded of how valuable they are to our lives.
